What a material guide does.
A material guide positions the work accurately at the sewing point, holding a seam allowance, an edge, or a fold at a fixed distance from the needle so the operator sews a straight, consistent line without watching the edge every stitch. It is the simplest and most universal of the guiding attachments, and often the most useful.
Guides range from a simple edge guide that sets a seam allowance to shaped guides that hold a curve or a specific edge profile, and they are sized to the operation and the material. Unlike a folder, a guide does not fold the material, it positions it, so it is the right tool when the edge is already prepared and only needs to be held.
