Lap Seam

Lap seam folders that join two plies with an overlapped, felled seam.

The lap seam category

What a lap seam folder does.

A lap seam folder overlaps two plies of material and folds their edges into each other, so the machine sews a flat, felled seam with no raw edges exposed on either side. It is the seam of a jean inseam, a workwear side seam, and any product that needs a strong, flat, double stitched join that lies smooth against the body or the frame.

Lap seam folders are built for a specific seam width and for the number of plies and their thickness, in configurations that feed both plies from a single folder or from a pair working together. The fold has to be exact because a felled seam that slips shows as a raw edge peeking out and as an uneven double row of stitching down its length.

Lap seaming joins panels wherever a flat, durable, finished seam is needed, so the folder depends on the seam width and the material. Choosing one means matching the finished seam width and the ply count to the product, the fabric weight to the folder, and the folder to the double needle machine that sews the felled seam.
